Message From the President (2003)

Dear Friend,

The War in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has involved armies of six countries and lasted over 5 years. As eloquently expressed by The United Nations Children's Fund - UNICEF, the War in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been one of the bloodiest conflicts known since the Second World War. But thanks to the efforts of the international community and the United Nations, this war has been stopped.

The War has caused profound social consequences, killing nearly 4 million people, halting the formal economy, and crippling social services. Our University has been critically affected in providing an education to the Congolese students. Nearly 50% of our students are enrolled in a health related major. Can you image a country without nurses, doctors, and health care professionals? There would be no one to prescribe medicine, set broken bones, heal life threatening diseases. Who would want children to face such a bleek scenario?

In tragic times such as this, Americans have always found the strength to rally together to give help where they can. I hope that you’ll join the efforts of the American Children & Students Appeal for War-Torn Congo’s Forgotten Children and Students initiative that has started by the work of a student group at Framingham State College in Massachusetts.

This is an urgent appeal to you: students, children, parents and organizations to donate $1, $5, $10, $20, $100, any amount that you can afford. Education is the bedrock of any society. Every dollar you donate today for education will advance social change. It will benefit not only students, but also families, children...and the nation.

Thank you and regards,

Dimandja Kasongo
